Texas Tech is located in Lubbock, Texas and lubbock was founded in 1876. Lubbock was named after Thomas S. Lubbock, a Texas ranger. It is in the country seat of Lubbock country. The city is in the northwestern part of Texas. The region is historically known as the Llano Estacado. It is home to three University's which are Lubbock Christian University, Texas Tech University, and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. In 2011 the Lubbock area had an estimated 290,002 people. Lubbock's nickname is the "Hub City'. This area is the largest cotton-growing region in the entire world. Lubbock was selected as the 12th best place to start a small business. Lubbock High School has also been selected for three years as one of the top high schools in the United States. Lubbock has a lot of agriculture and it continues to grow. One of the biggest disasters that hit lubbock was on May 11, 1970, when a tornado hit and killed 26 people. Lubbock built a memorial for the people that were killed in this horrible disaster. Then in 2006, there was an estimated population of 212,365 people. Lubbock continues to grow relying on the vast agriculture industry.
History
A History about Texas Tech, Texas Tech was created in 1923 by legislative action. Texas Tech has the largest comprehensive higher education in the western two-thirds of the state of Texas. The University has a higher education in a region larger than 46 of the 50 states in the United States. Texas Tech is the only campus in Texas that has a major University,Law school, and Medical School. Texas Tech was originally named Texas Technological College and opened in 1925 with 6 buildings and an enrollment of 914.
tRADITIONS
One of Texas Tech's Favorite traditions is the Carol of Lights. 13 buildings are lit up with over 25,000 red,white,and orange lights. The tradition started in 1959 when Harold Hinn came up with the idea. The bad thing was no one saw the lights because it was during Christmas Break.
